Dear Friends of St. Pat’s,
When I think of our responsibility as a school, I think of care. We have an obligation to care for the institution, and for every individual, each person who arrives at our door. This care extends to the heart, mind and body of our students. A caring school has a culture that is thoughtful, seeks the good in and for others, and provides a safe place for children to stretch themselves. It should be a physical environment where people feel comfortable to try new things, take risks, and especially, to feel at home.
St. Patrick Catholic School is characterized by care, and yet, we are aware that we are not as safe as most contemporary schools are. It is a construction reality that our many doors with old lock systems are not the standard of care that we want. From morning extended care at 6:00 am to pick-up in the gym after a 7:00 pm basketball practice, I would love to see our school building more secure. In order to do this, our 2017 Fund-an-Item is a more sophisticated keyless entry with visual contact of people entering our school. It is not to keep people out but to provide a more secure school for all who are in it. It is a level of care that is more important than ever and we need your generous assistance.
Our plan is to have keyless, pad entry at our major entry doors including our front door, first floor access for Primary classes, a more secure entry into the gym and the entry door off the playground. I hope we can improve the safety and aesthetics of our building by extending awnings over doorways so that the wet weather stays outside and off our wood floor and tiles. The plan calls for providing better fencing securing our vehicles and the less visible doorway into the Northeast corner of our building.
We have plans for modernization of our building but this Fund-an Item is for the present. Most everything we do for the Fund-an-Item will be able to be utilized in any building updates in the future. Feeling safe is to feel cared for, and that is a feeling I want for our children and staff to feel everyday.
St. Patrick pray for us,
